Diwali 2026 Getaways: Mountains, Beaches or Heritage Cities – Where Should You Go?
Posted by: Vishvabandhu Patel

Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November. Take Monday the 9th off and you get a nice 5-day break (7–11 Nov). Want cool air and hills? Pick the mountains: Manali or Shimla. Want a warm beach and slow days? Pick the coast: Goa or Pondicherry. Want Diwali full of lights and festive noise? Pick a heritage city: Jaipur or Ayodhya. One warning: Diwali week fills up fast. Book 4–6 weeks early, or you will pay a lot more.

Diwali is near. You have a few days off. The weather is perfect, and everyone is in a happy mood. So the big question is simple: where should you go?

Some people love cool hills. Some want a warm beach. Some want a city full of lights. All three make a great Diwali trip. The best one just depends on you: who is coming along, how many days you have, and what kind of break you want.

First, Get Your Dates Right

Here is the festival week:

  • Dhanteras — 6 November
  • Kaali Chaudas — 7 November
  • Diwali (main day) — Sunday, 8 November
  • Govardhan Puja — Monday, 9 November
  • Gujarati New Year— Tuesday, 10 November
  • Bhai Dooj — 11 November

Take Monday, 9 November off and travel from 7 to 11 November. You lose just one day of leave. Add one more day and the farther trips, like Goa or a Shimla–Manali trip, feel relaxed, not rushed. Everyone plans this same way, so the early birds get the best deals.

The Mountains

November is a quiet, off-peak time in the hills. The big summer rush is over, and the winter snow crowd has not come yet. So the crowds are thin and the prices are low. Days are bright and cool. Nights are cold. Pack warm clothes, not just a light jacket.

  1. Manali

Manali works for all kinds of travellers. Families enjoy apple gardens and easy valley drives. Couples love the small cafes of Old Manali and the quiet forest around Hadimba temple. If you like some thrill, visit Solang Valley, or drive through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. In just twenty minutes, the green valley turns into bare brown mountains, it feels like a new world. One tip: don't spend a full day on Mall Road. The best parts of Manali are outside it.

A Manali trip cost for a good 4–6 day package is usually around ₹16,000 to ₹28,000 per person. This covers your stay, travel and sightseeing. Doing it all on your own can cost a little less, but then you must chase cabs and hotels yourself in a very busy week. From Ahmedabad, the easy way is a flight to Chandigarh (or Bhuntar), and then a drive up to Manali.

Good to know: By late November, the high roads like Rohtang can close suddenly after early snow. A smart plan keeps one spare day, so one closed road does not spoil your trip.

  2. Shimla

Shimla is an easy hill trip, and that is a good thing. Short drives, a walkable town, and good hotels make it perfect for parents and small kids. Most tourists rush to Kufri, which gets crowded. The nicer, calmer spots are Mashobra, Naldehra and the apple area of Narkanda. Try to ride the Kalka–Shimla toy train at least one way. It is a famous heritage train, not just a tourist ride.

A Shimla trip package for 3–4 days usually costs ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 per person. Many smart travellers do not stop at Shimla alone. The 6-day Shimla–Manali package covers both hill towns and often costs less per day than booking each one apart.

The Beaches

Don't like the cold? Then go to the coast. November is one of the best months for a beach trip. The rains are over, the sea is calm, and the evenings feel golden. It is the perfect window.

  1. Goa

Goa in November is much nicer than Goa in summer. It is still green from the rains, the season is just starting, and the prices are still lower than the December rush. The old rule is simple. North Goa (Anjuna, Vagator, Assagao) is for energy, markets and late nights — the Saturday night market at Arpora is worth planning for. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Patnem) is for quiet beaches and early nights. Pick one side and stay there. If you keep moving between them, you waste half your trip in traffic.

A Goa trip package for 3–4 nights usually costs ₹18,000 to ₹35,000 per person. The gap depends on whether you pick a simple hotel or a beach resort. Prices go up every week as December comes close, so booking early saves the most money here. Ahmedabad has direct flights to Goa — just about 1.5 to 2 hours. So it is a real long-weekend option, not just a dream.

  2. Pondicherry

Pondicherry is best for people who like a slow, calm trip. The French area (White Town) has yellow walls, flowers and small bakeries. The Tamil area next to it is busier and more local. Promenade Beach is for an evening walk, not swimming. For real sand, go to Paradise Beach or the quiet beach near Auroville. The town is walkable, safe and friendly. That is why solo travellers and couples love it.

The Pondicherry solo trip cost is low. A budget day is about ₹1,400. A comfortable day is about ₹3,500 — this covers your room, food and a rented scooter or autos. So a 3-day solo trip costs around ₹8,000 to ₹15,000, not counting your train or flight. Most travellers from Gujarat reach Chennai first, then drive about 150 km (around 3 hours) to Pondicherry.

Good to know: Early November can still bring a few short rains on this coast. Carry a light raincoat, and keep one indoor day (Ashram, cafes, Auroville) as a backup.

The Heritage Cities: Diwali at Its Brightest

Want to really feel Diwali, not run away from it? The old cities light up like magic. Think glowing buildings, busy markets, temple bells, and crackers over the rooftops.

  1. Jaipur

Jaipur during Diwali is one of the best sights in India. The markets of Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar are fully covered in lights, and each one tries to look brighter than the next. The whole old city shines, and locals come out just to see it. Visit the forts in the day, Amber, Nahargarh for a sunset city view, and City Palace. See the markets after dark. And eat well: pyaaz kachori and ghewar are famous Diwali treats here.

A Jaipur holiday package for 3 days usually costs ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 per person. Jaipur is also one of the easiest Diwali trips from Ahmedabad, simply by train or road (~660 km). You can even add Pushkar or Udaipur if you have more days.

  2. Ayodhya

For a trip that touches the heart, Ayodhya is very special right now. Its Deepotsav lights up lakhs of diyas along the Ram ki Paidi ghats of the Sarayu river. The whole city is planned around this grand event. Add darshan at the Ram Mandir, a climb up to Hanuman Garhi, and the evening Saryu aarti.

An Ayodhya sightseeing package for 2–3 days usually costs ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 per person. But one honest warning: the Deepotsav crowd is huge. The smart plan is to visit a day before or after the main peak, and to book your hotel and darshan early. This is the one place on the list where "we will manage after reaching" simply does not work.

    Plan your Ayodhya tour

Still Not Sure? Decide in Ten Seconds

  • Travelling with parents or small kids? Shimla or Jaipur, short drives, easy days.
  • Want a romantic or solo trip? Pondicherry or Manali.
  • Here for the beach and the fun? Goa, no doubt.
  • Want the festive feeling? Jaipur for the lights, Ayodhya for the devotion.
  • Have only 3 days? Stay close, Jaipur, Shimla or Pondicherry.
  • Have 5–6 days? Go bigger, Goa, or a Shimla–Manali trip.

When to Book (Please Read This Twice)

Diwali is one of the busiest travel weeks in the whole year. Flight prices go up every day. The good trains, like Ahmedabad–Jaipur, or the trains towards Ayodhya, sell out their sleeper and AC seats early. The best-value hotels in Goa, Jaipur and the hills also go first. This is not to scare you. It just happens the same way every single year.

So the rule is simple: book 4 to 6 weeks early. Early booking is not only about saving a little money. It is about getting the dates you really want, instead of planning the trip around whatever is left.
