Barkot is a small Himalayan town in Uttarakhand that most travellers pass through without realising they should stop. Sitting on the banks of the Yamuna River at an altitude of around 1,220 metres, surrounded by dense deodar and pine forests, it is a place of genuine mountain quiet that offers a very different experience from the busier hill stations of the region. For pilgrims undertaking the Chota Char Dham Yatra, Barkot is an important stopover on the way to Yamunotri, the source of the sacred Yamuna. Barkot tour packages from Aasaan Holidays are designed around both the pilgrimage and the landscape.
The drive to Barkot from Dehradun is beautiful, passing through Mussoorie and the Yamuna valley. Barkot itself is the base for the trek to Yamunotri, which begins at Janki Chatti, 12 kilometres further up the road. Barkot offers trout fishing in the Yamuna, nature walks through the surrounding forest, and a sense of unhurried mountain life that is increasingly rare.
